In May 1986, seven-year-old Francis Bok was selling eggs and peanuts near his village in southern Sudan when several dozen Arab horsemen burst into the market and set fire to the peddlers' stalls. First, they murdered the adult males and then, they rounded up the women and children and forced them to leave with them towards the north. Both Bok and many other children were taken as slaves by Baggara Bedouin families, thus continuing an old and abject tradition that has been perpetuated for several centuries and to this day. For ten years, Bok lived in a miserable hut, with goats and cattle, eating scraps; He was forced to work as a shepherd in exchange for his life, which was permanently threatened. “At night, I was lying on the ground in a shed, awake, wondering who would come to rescue me,” confesses the author of the work. After several failed escape attempts, the young Francis managed to escape almost miraculously and after many adventures, reached North America, where his testimony moved a couple of presidents and tens of millions of citizens. Today Bok has become a prominent activist for an anti-slavery organization.
