    Sinopsis

It has tenderness, affection, hope, love, friendship, companionship and, as I have already said, a lot of humor. Luisito the Gafe, the Maruja, the Beast, the One-armed, the lazy, the Depressive, the Cockroach the priest, the Nervous, the Smiles, the Sergeant of the Civil Guard, the Cropped, the Dark, the Sweet, the Gentleman, the Cafre, the Undertaker, the Intellectual, the Doctor, the Old Man, the Skunk, the Cross-Eyed, the Delrevés, the Singing Boy, the Messenger, Skinny, Fright, Bombetas, Manolo from the tavern, Paquito, Maestro, Hanged Man and Stallion. And, of course, Sandalio, the village idiot, a mute, ugly, skinny, gangly, big-headed, hairless child, with ears that were too big and protruding and with snot always hanging from his nose. All of them are the protagonists of this novel. During the Civil War, they have decided to leave their village, a lost town in the province of Guadalajara, to defend everything they believe in: freedom, justice, democracy and, of course, the Republic. That is why they do not hesitate to form a volunteer militia to defend the cities of Brihuega and Guadalajara from the siege of Franco's troops and, above all, from the black shirts, the Italian fascist soldiers who, voluntarily, placed themselves under the orders of Mussolini to support Franco.
