«How long does it have to pass before some war episodes that were once experienced as an epic can be reinterpreted in a humorous way? Judging by The Little Masters, not much. Barely nineteen years had passed since the end of the partisan war when, in 1964, Luigi Meneghello published the first version of this exciting novel about his experience as a member of the Resistance. In the summer of 1943, after the dismissal of Mussolini and the subsequent armistice, Meneghello was one of the thousands of Italian army soldiers who rushed home and ended up joining the armed struggle against the fascist forces and the German army. occupation. The definitive victory would not come until April 45, and The Little Masters gives an account of what Meneghello saw and experienced during those almost two years. [...] If within the Resistance there were parties with communist, socialist, monarchist tendencies, etc., he and his friends (idealistic university students, lovers of poetry) considered themselves Crocians, that is, followers of the historian and philosopher Benedetto Croce... Meneghello was then a young intellectual apprentice who life had forced to become a man of action. Hence the irony of the title."
