In this novel, the days prior to the entry of Nazi troops into Paris are reconstructed through the eyes of a young Spanish exile who, with a blind writer friend in decline, gets into every trouble imaginable. It is above all a time of confusion, in which many inhabitants of Paris are hastily leaving the city, in which the police have lowered their guard awaiting the development of events, and in which both petty criminals and Secret agents have more work than they can handle. The protagonists' encounter with a mysterious young foreigner puts them in the crosshairs of the local police and the counterespionage service. The sense of humor, irony, literary quotes, lively rhythm and precise and elaborate writing mark a lighthearted and very well constructed novel.
