For more than fifteen centuries, people died in a very similar way, with hardly any changes, and in just one generation things have changed radically. The majority of people, when they are affected by an incurable disease, spend their last days or weeks of life in hospitals that have not been designed for it and dying at home, something common in other times, is today very difficult, despite the fact that this is the wish of the vast majority of patients. Doctors, and to some extent also other health professionals, have added difficulties in helping patients in their dying process. To the lack of training in Schools and Universities, we must frequently add the more or less unconscious feeling of professional failure experienced by professionals who, unfortunately, have only been trained to cure diseases. To this we could add the corresponding anguish in the face of death itself that almost always causes in healthcare personnel when they approach the person who is about to die.
